Contactless donations
People often say “contactless donation” when they mean giving without handing over cash or a physical card. That can mean tap-to-pay on an EFTPOS terminal — or a QR code on a tin. TheTin uses the second path. It is not an NFC terminal.

- Tap-to-pay / NFC — the giver holds a card or phone against a terminal. That needs hardware TheTin does not provide.
- QR-based giving — the giver scans a printed code, then pays on their own phone. That is what TheTin does.
- EFTPOS — a staffed terminal. Useful in a shop; heavy for a foyer tin.
TheTin’s step is: scan, then Stripe Checkout. Why organisations want that at all is on Cashless giving.
What a giver may see
After the scan, Stripe Checkout may offer available payment methods depending on the giver’s country, device, browser, currency, and eligibility. That can include:
- credit or debit card
- Apple Pay
- Google Pay
Not every giver will see every method every time. TheTin does not promise a particular wallet. Card numbers go to Stripe, not to TheTin.
How TheTin uses that flow
Churches and charities print a page QR. Money goes to the recipient’s Stripe account. TheTin never holds it. The fee is 1c–99c NZD per payment; Stripe’s processing fee is separate.
